Wondering about Collagen Supplements

Recently there is a lot of buzz about collagen supplements for women and their benefits on skin, hair, joint pain, and digestion.

There were two reasons that intrigued me. First, they claim to improve aging skin texture, fine lines, and wrinkles. Second, they help keep the skin hydrated which is great for people suffering from eczema.

There are many articles and videos about the lack of evidence to prove the claims about collagen benefits. Conversely, there are many articles and videos touting the benefits of collagen.

About Collagen Supplements for Women

Collagen is a protein that forms the structural framework of connective tissue, including skin, bones, and tendons. Collagen is also a major component of hair and nails. Collagen is produced by the body in small amounts. The main sources of collagen are meat, fish, poultry, dairy products, and eggs. Collagen is also found in certain plants, such as wheat, rye, and rice. It is important for the body because it is necessary for the growth and maintenance of tissues.

My Experience

When I read that collagen supplements could help eczema, I was excited to try them out despite being unconvinced that they would help. I have tried eczema creams that work but seem to become less effective after a while. My eczema worsens in the sun and persists in the winter months with the dry air.

I do try to stay hydrated so my water intake is a minimum 48 ounces plus per day.

The result: After about 1-1/2 months, I was satisfied to find my eczema spot did not completely disappear but was not inflamed. The spot still appears drier than the rest of my skin but not itchy or red. I think another benefit was the relief of my dryness on the balls and heels of my feet. I have been using foot creams to relieve my dry heels and balls of my feet but they were never relieved of the dryness. Now they are not baby soft but not scaly or cracked.

How to Take Types of Collagen

You can add collagen powder to your beverages. I recommend blending it into a smoothie if the taste is difficult to take. You can also take it in pill form.
